The Role of a Nutritionist

  • To be aware of different client groups and common problems in those groups.
  • Thorough knowledge of what to do before, during and after a client consultation.

  • To have an understanding of ethics and safety that you should adhere to.

 

The Digestive System

  • To have an understanding of the anatomy of the digestion.
  • To be aware of the functions of the digestive system.
  • To have an understanding of the sequence of organs that food travel through when going through the digestion process.
  • To be aware of how the body breaks down and absorbs nutrients.
  • To understand how the body disposes of excess material and solid waste.

 

Carbohydrates

Vitamins and Minerals

  • To be aware of the essential vitamins and minerals the body needs.
  • To understand that we can get these vitamins and minerals from the food we eat.
  • To know the symptoms that can result from the deficiency of the vitamins and minerals.
  • That an overdose of a vitamin or mineral can be as problematic as a deficiency.

 

The Glycaemic Index and The Glycaemic Load

  • To have an understanding of the Glycaemic Index (GI) of a food.
  • To have an understanding of the Glycaemic Load (GL) of a food.
  • To understand the difference between GI and GL scores.

 

A Healthy Diet

  • To have an understanding of dietary guidelines in accordance with how many servings we should be consuming per day.
  • To be aware that to have a healthy diet the body requires wholesome grains, vegetables, protein, fruit, dairy, fish, pulses, seeds, nuts and water.
  • To understand the basics of each food group and the recommended servings per day.

 

Specialist Diets

  • To understand what is involved in a vegetarian, vegan, restrictive and organic diet.
  • To identify the different categories of vegetarianism.
  • To be aware of the factors that classify food as organic.

 

Acid/Alkaline Balance

  • To understand that diet has a huge impact on improving health.
  • To be aware of healthy habits that you can offer to your clients.
  • To have been introduced to alkalising and are aware of alkaline and acidic foods.

 

Allergies and Intolerances

  • To understand what an allergy and intolerance is.
  • To be aware how to recognise problem foods.
  • How to treat the possibility of an allergy or intolerance.

Setting up your Business

  • To have thought about where you will set up your business.
  • To recognise that you will need certain equipment and have considered how you will obtain this equipment.
  • To know the importance of a business plan and how to write one.
  • To have thought about business operations, accounting and the importance of keeping records.
  • To have created your own professional development plan.

Marketing your Business

  • To recognise the different client groups you may work with. You are also aware of the specialisations within the nutrition field.
  • To have thought about how to market your business.

How the Course Works

The Diploma in Nutrition will allow you to study at your own pace in your own home. You can start it in your own time and complete what you can when you have the time. You will have a year to finish the course and even if you don’t finish it in that time, arrangements can be made.

Assessment

There are 13 modules to complete and each of these include an assignment. Once you have completed an assignment you will simply email it to your tutor and wait for feedback.

You will receive detailed feedback within 5 working days from your tutor. They will be there to help you every step of the way.

Certificate on Completion

Once you have completed all assignments, you will be awarded with a certificate. Your certificate will be sent in the post within 10 working days of completing your course.
