Description

The aim of this Level 3 Diploma is to provide qualified massage therapists with the specialist
knowledge and practical skills required to safely and confidently deliver lymphatic drainage
treatments for clients recovering from surgery or living with lipoedema or lymphoedema. The
course is designed to support therapists in adapting their approach to meet the unique
needs of these client groups, whether managing post-operative swelling following cancer
and cosmetic surgery, chronic lymphatic dysfunction, or promoting general lymphatic health
within a holistic or clinical setting.

Training is delivered through a blended learning model, combining self-paced online theory
modules with comprehensive in-person practical training. The online content introduces
core lymphatic anatomy, physiology, pathology and the principles of fluid balance and immune
function. The face-to-face sessions focus on developing hands-on proficiency in manual lymphatic drainage techniques, with in-depth guidance on consultation skills, treatment planning,
contraindications, and post-surgical complications and adaptations. This course prepares
therapists to work ethically and effectively with clients requiring specialist lymphatic care.

Online Theory Modules
The online component covers the essential knowledge required to understand and support
the lymphatic system. Topics include:
• Anatomy, Physiology and pathologies of the Lymphatic System
• The Role of Lymph in Fluid Balance and Immunity
• Introduction to Lipoedema, Lymphoedema, and Post-Surgical Healing
These modules are self-paced and must be completed before attending the practical sessions.

In-Person Practical Training
Delivered over three full days, this part of the course includes:
• Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Techniques
• Full Body MLD Protocol
• Post-Surgical Adaptations (e.g. abdominoplasty, liposuction, breast reconstruction)
• Techniques for Working with Lipoedema and Lymphoedema
• Client Consultation and Assessment
• Treatment Planning and Goal Setting
• Contraindications and Cautions
• Therapist Body Mechanics, Flow, and Safe Pressure
• Supporting Lifestyle and Self-Care Strategies for Lymphatic Health

Post-Course Case Studies
To achieve full certification, learners must complete a series of case studies demonstrating safe, effective application of MLD techniques across a range of client scenarios. These are submitted for review and feedback by the course tutor

Delivery Method
This course follows a blended learning model, consisting of:
• Self-paced online theory modules – completed in advance through Think Tree
Hub platform
• Three days of in-person practical training – delivered face-to-face at our accredited
venue in Darwen, Lancashire
• Ongoing tutor support during case study completion – including access to weekly
online group meetings where learners can ask questions, share experiences, and
receive professional guidance

Small group delivery allows for guided supervision, hands-on practice, and tailored
feedback. Learners will have access to resources, peer support, and structured guidance throughout
the full duration of the course and case study period.

Assessment Methods
Learners will study each module in order, engaging with learning resources, (video content, downloadable documents and worksheets, recommended reading etc).
Knowledge Assessment will take place in the form of:
1. 2 x 500 Word Assignments
2. Group Discussion with Question and
Answers
3. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) Online

Practical Assessment will be in take place via:
1. Ongoing tutor observation during the in
person training days
2. Case Studies
3. Summative Practical observation

A pass rate of 80% must be achieved in the online modules within three attempts to enable progress.

A Diploma of Achievement is awarded on success completion of all elements.

Prior Learning / Prerequisites
To enrol on this course, learners must:
• Hold a Level 3 Diploma in Massage Therapy or equivalent qualification including
Anatomy Physiology & Pathology
• Be aged 18 or over

Evidence of prior qualifications may be requested at the time of enrolment. This course
is not suitable for complete beginners or those without hands-on massage experience.

Who the course is for?
This course is ideal for qualified massage therapists who wish to specialise in lymphatic drainage techniques to support clients with:
• Post-surgical recovery (e.g. cosmetic surgery, liposuction, abdominoplasty, BBL)
• Lipoedema, a chronic fat disorder requiring gentle lymphatic techniques and client education
• Lymphoedema, where care must be adapted for long-term swelling and fluid retention
• General lymphatic health and immune system support within holistic wellness settings

It is particularly suitable for therapists working in aesthetics, or holistic environments, and those
seeking to expand their scope of practice with evidence-informed lymphatic techniques
