School of Natural Therapies delivers Oncology Massage training at a 5-star London Spa.

Carlton Tower Jumeirah Group invited Marc Innes and Joseph O’Dwyer, from the School of Natural therapies, to deliver a 3-day oncology programme for the spa team at the luxury 5-star hotel in London’s prestigious Kensington.

The course instils adapted massage techniques, to suit the needs of the spa guests, who may be living with, being treated for, or are recovering from cancer.

The spa team are now able to offer bespoke massage treatments and facials, adapted to the stage of cancer, or treatment that the client is at.

Marc Innes

Marc says, ‘until recent times, sadly many spas have found themselves turning guests away, due to their medical history’.

Marc thinks that the reasoning behind this is due to the misguided notion that somehow massage may spread cancer or may somehow be dangerous.

In fact, no evidence exists to support this notion says Marc, and we see the same recognised massage benefits for a client who has cancer; moreover, we often receive guest feedback that suggest that guests are also able to reconnect with their body during the massage, particularly when recovering from after-effects of surgery, such as a mastectomy.

The course also provides in insight into the after effects of surgery for cancer and how hands on interventions may also be helpful.

The 3-day course programme covers extensive theoretical knowledge of cancer, and importantly, common oncology terminology, that the therapist needs to understand when carrying out a consultation.

Alongside this, adapted massage techniques are instilled into each therapist’s hands, in order to deliver a comfortable and bespoke massage that the client feels comfortable with and of course, reaps the benefits of hands-on touch therapy!

This course is also taught at the School of Natural Therapies’ London premises for independent massage therapists.

Marc Innes is a founder member of SATCC (Standards Authority for Touch in Cancer Care) and sits on the advisory board. He has 23 years NHS experience, prior to entering the massage industry in 2003.

SATCC is an independent and governing body that is set to be the national standard in the UK and Ireland for spas, salons therapists and those touched by cancer.

The programme is approved by SATCC and Think Tree Hub and is insurable for all therapists who meet the high standards required.
