There are many interpretations and definitions of the word calm and equally different languages use this word to represent different states of being.
What does it mean to you?
For me it incorporates three states of being a human being Mental, Physical, Emotional. A calm mind, physically tension free and emotionally balanced. Now some of you may be blessed with managing this on a daily basis, however with the best of intention we can all fall foul to imbalance.
At this particularly volatile time worldwide we all deserve some calm in our lives as we are finding ourselves reacting more and responding less.
Our knee jerk reactions create disharmony and as with fight or flight we can become defensive and insular to the fact we don’t see rhyme or reason. This can then escalate into further uneasy for others whether intentional or not.
By responding, we allow ourself time to stop and think, weigh up the odds and consider the consequences of our actions and impact on others.
So how do we manage this? What can we do?
Often, we are looking for solutions from others and there are some fantastic ones out there which can be life changing. I have looked to simple methods, which can aid and support calmness, below;
Breathe

A simple yet very effective way to focus the mind. Breathing is so powerful, yet so underrated.
- Close your eyes and place one hand on your heart and the other just below on our solar plexus.
- Then breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth, almost swallowing each breathe to get the depth x 3 (this is just a guide). It allows you to take time and bring your body to a state of homeostasis
Meditate

Manage your expectations
Often, we set a very high rate of expectation and the consequence can be disappointment, which then also causes dis-ease. It is very easy to look at these simple solutions and I am confident we all know what to do and how to it. However, we are human and we can easily get drawn into a false sense of security so therefore we all need reminders and coping strategies and methods.
So, let’s focus on ourselves as we know if we can help ourselves we can help others.
Be kind to yourself
