Should all therapists know about nutrition?
I was reading something the other day about a woman called Marguerite Patten who was a cookery writer and nutritionist during the Second World War. And I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that with her expert knowledge, she played a huge role in keeping people healthy when food was short during those dark times. It’s often said, that at the end of the war people were generally healthier than they’d ever been – despite all the food shortages.

Today we are facing the opposite problem – food is so plentiful now that people are eating too much – and often too much of the wrong things. Obesity is the 21st century’s health crisis.
So there really is a need for therapists and trainers to study nutrition and help tackle this potential calamity. So we created a Level 3 Nutrition for Health course at The Wellbeing Fitness Education Centre. It’s aimed at enlightening the wider population, debunking overcomplex terminology, gimmicks and trends that are not supported by sound scientific reasoning. Comprising a ten-week intensive programme, it gives students an understanding of healthy food consumption and how to offer nutritional guidance when complementing additional services such as personal training or therapeutic treatments while staying within the professional boundaries of the qualification.
We are teaching the course LIVE online, which means opportunities to work together in groups, discuss, ask questions etc. Our tutor, Joel Harfield, has a Masters level degree in nutrition
The course doesn’t required any previous experience in nutrition and healthy eating and is there to widen the support training and performance specialists as well as hands-on therapists.
Topics include:
- functional and valid anatomy and physiological systems relevant to nutrition.
- Principles of nutrition linked to healthy living and physical activity.
- Methods of collecting, analysing and evaluating personal nutritional information from others.
- The national framework of best practice and professional boundaries for nutritional guidance and advice.
