A recently published Loughborough University study [https://www.lboro.ac.uk/news-events/news/2020/october/large-gluteus-maximus-key-for-sprint-speed-study/] -picked up widely in the national press – examining the muscle size of elite sprinters has revealed a large gluteus maximus is key to achieving top speeds on the track. But most of you probably knew that already, didn’t you?!?
This fascinating image taken from the study shows MRI scan slices through the pelvis and both hip joints of three different study participants with the hip muscles highlighted in different colours. The two grey circles in each image are the head of the femur in the hip joint. The greater size of the gluteus maximus (in orange) according to sprint ability is clearly visible (credit: Rob Miller/Loughborough University). For those of you interested in learning more about the glutes, Lotus Publishing are sharing a free sample chapter from John Gibbons’ book The Vital Glutes: Connecting the Gait Cycle to Pain and Dysfunction’ (Amazon, £11.89). This book comprehensively covers functional anatomy of the glutes, role in the gait cycle and myofascial slings, and how to resolve gluteal imbalances causing pain and dysfunction with the same techniques that the Bodymaster uses himself.

Think of yourself as a car with six cylinders in your engine: the engine has a certain way of firing and so does your body. In The Vital Glutes John Gibbons shares with you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills that will enable you to tune the body with maximum efficiency.
We’re sharing with you a free sample chapter from that book: Chapter 5 – Functional Anatomy of the Gluteus Maximus. Click here for your copy!
