Supporting the wellbeing of hospital-based medical professionals

A new service for front line for front line medical professionals based in hospitals such as doctors, nurses, midwives and ambulance paramedics was launched last September. It was inspired partly by feedback given to a related project – Connecting Reiki with Medicine (https://www.reikiwithmedicine.org/) and partially through emotional requests from medical staff with Reiki for support on social media platforms last year.

Co-created by ThinkTree Managing Consultant Rosemary Pharo, the service has brought together teams of professional Reiki practitioners from accredited registers and Reiki Council member organisations to offer remote Reiki treatments. Practitioners need to have had at least 12 months’ experience of working with distant Usui Reiki with multiple clients. The team is always looking to grow and new volunteers are encouraged to sign up – current volunteers give very positive feedback from being involved in the project and there is a monthly team meeting and share which is very positively received by the practitioners.

The service was designed to fit in with medics’ busy schedules and lack of downtime – clients self-refer to the website www.reikimedic-care.org, sign up and choose four days in a row where they can find 20 minutes to relax from early In the morning to late at night while a team sends them Reiki. The service is automated as far as possible.

Reiki Medic-Care also has a research-based aspect. Clients can opt in for patient outcome data to be collected and then analysed, giving valuable data on distant Reiki, something that there is currently little data on.

Please do pass on the web link to medical professionals you have contact with who would appreciate and could benefit from the service. Stress and anxiety is ramping up again amongst hospital-based staff as covid-cases increase and Reiki Medic-Care is here to help.

As a completely free service, Reiki Medic-Care’s set up costs have been supported by generous seed funders. However on an on-going basis, fundraising will be essential to cover admin and system costs. Donations can be made via https://reikihealthcareresearch.org/ or offers of help or introductions to hospital units/wellbeing hubs can be sent to admin@reikimedic-care.org.
