Do you live in an area where therapies come under a Special Treatment Licence? For most people this could mean London.

Are you teaching massage for therapists who might be visiting these areas?

Some councils may have got the idea somehow that ‘Swedish Massage’ does not count as an exempted treatment. While all soft tissue therapists know that Swedish Massage refers generally to a number of classical massage techniques that form the basis of much if not most holistic massage routines, our advice to schools is that certificates state ‘Body Massage’ rather than Swedish Massage, for this reason.

Therapists who do not live in London, but who are taking part in exhibitions e.g. in Excel, also need to belong to an exempted organisation like ThinkTree Hub (conditions may apply) or pay the local council the individual fee, which has gone up hugely in recent years.

To be exempted, you need to have studied a modality to Level 3.

In essence, most skin-on-skin touch therapies in London require a Special Treatment Licence or an exemption by way of membership of recognised organisations. However, different Councils may now have different lists of treatments which they consider come under a treatment licence.

Our advice is to contact us if you have any need to work in an area with a Special Treatment Licence for advice and, if you are teaching, to accredit your course with us before advertising it so we can ensure it meets the needs of your therapists.
