Get it on with the two Ians
Ian Ryves and Ian Spiby own Wellbeing Fitness, a health and fitness studio with main branches in Northamptonshire. They also run Level 3 courses for people who wish to qualify as personal trainers and in addition, license these courses to over 30 gyms and fitness studios in the UK and Ireland.
Here’s what they have to say:
When we first started marketing to attract new clients at Wellbeing Fitness, we thought in our innocence that all we would have to do is tell them that if they wanted to keep healthy as they grew older, they needed to do regular exercise. And because our target audience was (and still is) 45 to 65+, we thought that that would do the trick.
Exercise or die! Simple. They’d come flocking to us.
How wrong we were. We found out pretty quickly that EVERYONE knows they should take exercise, EVERYONE knows they should keep their weight down – but they just don’t do it. There’s always an excuse – “I’m too busy” – “I’m too stressed” – “I can’t afford it”. Much better and easier to sit on the sofa and eat cake!
What we found is that you have to change what’s going on in people’s heads and so we devised a six-week Mindset course – strategies which would help to change the way of thinking. We divided it up into lessons with a number of tasks to do between each lesson which would help to do what it said on the tin – alter the mindset.
Over the next few newsletters we thought we’d share some extracts from the course with you, either for your own use or for those of clients. We found ourselves that simply by doing the tasks we became a lot more focussed, a lot more efficient in our work.
So it might be worthwhile giving it a go.
The first session is called:
The Power of Goal Setting
“Change happens when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change” Tony Robbins
Setting goals has been proven many times to be a fundamental aspect of achieving success.
Goal setting works on various levels. Big goals are often called “Visions”. Things that need to be achieved to ensure that you move towards the vision we call “Outcomes”. The small things that you need to be doing now, we call “Actions”. These are all goals – they just vary in size.
The Vision is ultimately what you want to achieve but success is rarely gained by taking one great leap.
Normally it is about taking small incremental steps and doing this on a continuous basis. To some people this can be a bit demoralising because we all want immediate gratification – we all want a silver bullet. But once you understand that you are unlikely to achieve everything you desire straight away and that you are on a journey then you begin to set your expectations at the correct level.
So where are you now as far as goal-setting is concerned? We found a quotation a few months ago which really rang a bell. It says, “change is a door that can only be opened from the inside”. So if you want to change, YOU are the only person who can do it. There are lots of people (friends and family for instance) who will often support you and help you along the way but when the chips are down, it’s basically down to you.
Task. Where are you now?
Here’s a task to assist you on your journey.
Start by making some notes. Where are you right now? How do you feel? What is important in your life right now? What standards do you set yourself? What patterns do you see in your daily life? Be objective rather than judging yourself. It may be uncomfortable to admit where you are but that is the first step to change.
Try and do that and see how you get on.
